There are nearly 60 golf courses in Andalucía, of which 30 are on the Costa del Sol. 

 

Within minutes of the apartment are three excellent courses including the 9 hole Casares Golf & Country Club, Finca Cortesin (a Jack Nicklaus Academy Course) and the 18 hole Dona Julia course. There are 30 golf courses in the surrounding area including the famous golf clubs of Valderama, San Roque and Sotogrande.

A very recent course, opened in October 2006 right next door to the Casares del Sol development and the apartment.  Its elevated position gives great views over the
Mediterranean and the Afrcian coastline.  Designed by Cabell Robinson it has the luxury of very few buildings around the course and so it has a very natural outlook among the olive and cork trees.  A very long course, one of the longest in Europe.  The 13th hole was rated as one of the best 18 holes in Andalucia in a recent golf magazine. The course also has a Jack Nicklaus golf academy using his personally developed learning method.  The Club House and facilities are all an excellent standard and a bonus with their location so close to the Casares del Sol development.

Doña Julia Golf Course - 18 holes - Par 71 – 5629m (Yellow), 5025m (Red)

Located in the traditional town of Casares and so very close to the Casares del Sol apartment.  Designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido. Fantastic views of the Mediterranean from many holes, this course has very large greens and occupies a very large area.  Very new, but already very playable, good for all levels and reasonably priced.

 

La Duquesa Golf and Country Club - 18 holes – Par 72 – 5575m (Yellow), 4625m (Red)

La Duquesa Golf and Country Club is located at Manilva, the next town along the coast road south of Casares.  The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and is a typical Trent Jones layout.   This is quite a hilly course with wonderful sea and mountain views.

Estepona Golf - 18 holes – Par 70 – 5610m (Yellow), 5137m (Red)
Estepona is again very close to the Casares del Sol apartment. A popular, friendly course with a challenging layout, particularly when windy.  Designed by Luis Lopez Martinez and opened in 1989, and improved since then.  The course is situated amidst the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja and follows the natural contours of the land.

Atalaya Golf Club

Another course located at Estepona, very close to the Casares del Sol apartment, Atalaya is composed of two 18 hole par 72 courses, the Old Course and the New Course.

 

Old Course - 18 holes - Par 72 – 5856m (Yellow), 5178m (Red)

Atalaya Old Course was opened 1967. The course is flat with wide fairways surrounded by tall pines and lots of vegetation.

 

New Course - 18 holes - Par 72 – 5217m (Yellow), 4510m (Red)

Atalaya New Course was opened in 1991 and is gently sloping with views of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains.

 

El Paraiso Golf Club - 18 holes – Par 71 – 5912m (Yellow), 4998m (Red)
El Paraiso is located just outside Estepona and is one of the oldest established courses on the
Costa del Sol
.  Good holiday course in a valley surrounded by hills and plenty of vegetation, including hundreds of mature pine trees.  The fast greens and palm-tree lined fairways were designed by Gary Player in 1974.

 

Monte Mayor - 18 holes - Par 71 – 5354m (Yellow), 4800m (Red)

Monte Mayor is located at Benehavis in the countryside and has been dubbed the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular course.  Every hole has amazing views.  The layout is quite challenging, winding through a mountain valley, The course meanders through a mountain valley, with ravines, gullies and winding streams. The new clubhouse was inaugurated on 20 June 2003.

 

Flamingos Golf Club

Flamingos Golf Club is located at Cancelada and is another course with breath-taking views of the Mediterranean, Africa and Gibraltar. The course was designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido and has many cypress, orange, olive, pine, carob and chestnut trees as well as a lake formed by the Arroyo del Taraje stream. 

 

Flamingo Rosa - 18 holes - Par 72 – 5642m (Yellow), 4959m (Red)

A second course (Gran Flamingo) is due to open soon and will be a very long course, making it quite a challenge.

 

Los Arqueros - 18 holes - Par 72 – 5684m (Yellow), 4918m (Red)

San Pedro Alcantara, Costa del Sol, Spain (Marbella area)

Set amongst the Ronda hills, Los Arqueros is just a short drive from San Pedro de Alcantara and Puerto Banus and has lovely scenic views all the way down to the Mediterranean. This was the first Costa del Sol course designed by Seve Ballesteros and it opened in 1991.

 

 

La Brisas

Another Robert Trent Jones design, opened in 1969.  There are ten artificial lakes, with Bermuda grass fairways and many raised greens.  The course hosted the World Cup twice, the Spanish Open three times and as well as the Mediterranean Open. Water is a major feature on twelve holes.  18 holes.

 

 

 

Aloha - 18 holes – Par 72

Large and guarded greens at the Aloha Golf Course offer a good challenge.  The course was designed by Javier Arana and opened in 1975.  A well known course on the Costa del Sol, improved in recent years.

 

Los Naranjos - 18 holes – Par 72 – 6038m (Yellow), 5143m (Red)

Los Naranjos golf course is between Marbella and Puerto Banus at Nueva Andalucia.  This course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr  and opened in 1977.  Under the direction of Christer Sorensson, Los Naranjos is run on the philosophy that "golf means more than just sport."  Maximum use has been made of orange trees from which the course gets its name.

 

La Quinta

Interesting course with its elevated tees. The course opened in 1989 and has three nine-hole loops, played in different combinations through a large real estate development. Designed by  Manuel Piñero and Antonio Garcia Garrido.  A variety of hazards such as elevated tees with trees, water, sand and streams as well as raised greens. Home to the former World Champion Manuel Piñero's Golf School.

Sotogrande Courses

Robert Trent Jones designed this course which opened in 1964.  It is often voted amongst the top ten courses in Europe.  Also known as Sotogrande Old Course. A mature course with cork oaks, pines, eucalyptus and palm trees and many water hazards.  Wonderful course but difficult!

Almenara Hotel Golf - 18 (27) holes - Par 72 – 5726m (Yellow), 4873m (Red)

 Designed by Dave Thomas and located in cork woods.  This course has 27 holes arranged in three loops of 9 around the Almenara Hotel-Golf and two large lakes. The practice facilities include a 90 bay driving range (21 of which are under cover), 2 swing analysis rooms and 3 full size practice holes.  

 

Club de Golf La Reserva de Sotogrande - 18 holes - Par 72 – 6448m (White), 6048m (Yellow), 5104m (Red)

One of the latest courses in the area, designed by Cabell Robinson and opened in August 2003.  This is a long course with wide, undulating fairways and well guarded greens.

 

 

Club de Golf La Cañada - 18 holes – Par 71 – 5235m (Yellow), 4554m (Red)
This is a municipal course, but very worth playing.  The original 9 holes were designed by Robert Trent Jones, this has now been extended to a full 18 holes (designer David Thomas). The course is located in the hills adjacent to Valderrama. 

 

Club de Golf Valderrama - 18 holes – Par 72 – 6356m (Professional), 5481m (Executive), 5284m (Ladies Professional)

Designed by Robert Trent Jones originally in 1974 and redesigned and extended by Jones in 1985, this is one of the continent´s most famous and toughest challenges.  Valderrama hosted the 1997 32nd Ryder Cup and is now host to the Volvo Masters each year.  A limited number of starting times are offered to visitors.

San Roque Old Course - 18 holes - Par 72 – 6134m (Yellow), 5174m (Red)

The old course offers spectacular mountain views to the north and occasional glimpses of Gibraltar. The course is attractively landscaped course, the fairways are lined with mature trees.

 

San Roque New Course - 18 holes - Par 72 – 6079m (Yellow), 5010m (Red)

The new course was opened in 2003.  Designed by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros and was host to the Spanish Open (European PGA) in 2006.

This is a links course with great views over the Mediterranean to the Rock of Gibraltar and Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.  Designed by Peter Alliss the course has four beachside holes.
